Mathias Friis-Hansen is a Danish classical pianist who has gained international recognition for his virtuosic performances and musical interpretations. Born on May 12, 1985, in Copenhagen, Denmark, Friis-Hansen showed an early interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of six. He quickly demonstrated a natural talent for the instrument and began taking lessons with renowned piano teachers in Denmark. As a young musician, Friis-Hansen participated in numerous competitions and festivals, winning several awards and prizes. In 2003, he won first prize in the Danish Steinway Piano Competition, which led to his debut performance with the Danish National Symphony Orchestra. This performance was a major milestone in Friis-Hansen's career, as it marked the beginning of his professional career as a concert pianist. Over the years, Friis-Hansen has performed in some of the world's most prestigious concert halls, including Carnegie Hall in New York, the Royal Albert Hall in London, and the Berlin Philharmonic. He has collaborated with many of the world's leading orchestras, including the London Symphony Orchestra, the Berlin Philharmonic, and the New York Philharmonic. One of Friis-Hansen's most notable performances was his debut at the BBC Proms in 2010, where he performed Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 5 with the London Symphony Orchestra. The performance was widely praised by critics, who noted Friis-Hansen's technical skill and musical sensitivity. In addition to his performances as a soloist, Friis-Hansen is also an accomplished chamber musician. He has collaborated with many of the world's leading chamber ensembles, including the Emerson String Quartet and the Tokyo String Quartet. Friis-Hansen is also a passionate advocate for contemporary music and has premiered works by many of today's leading composers. Throughout his career, Friis-Hansen has received numerous awards and accolades for his performances and recordings. In 2012, he was awarded the prestigious Avery Fisher Career Grant, which recognizes outstanding young musicians who show exceptional promise for a significant career in music. He has also been awarded the Danish Music Critics' Prize and the Carl Nielsen Prize, among others. Friis-Hansen is known for his deep musical understanding and his ability to bring out the emotional depth and complexity of the music he performs. He is particularly admired for his interpretations of the works of Beethoven, Schumann, and Brahms, and is considered one of the leading interpreters of these composers of his generation. In addition to his performing career, Friis-Hansen is also a dedicated teacher and mentor. He has taught masterclasses at many of the world's leading music schools, including the Juilliard School, the Royal Academy of Music in London, and the Conservatoire de Paris. He is also a faculty member at the Royal Danish Academy of Music in Copenhagen, where he teaches piano and chamber music. Friis-Hansen's recordings have received critical acclaim and have been praised for their technical brilliance and musical sensitivity. His recording of Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 5 with the London Symphony Orchestra was named one of the best classical recordings of 2010 by The New York Times. He has also recorded the complete piano works of Schumann and Brahms, as well as works by contemporary composers such as Thomas Adès and Magnus Lindberg.
