The National Orchestra of Spain, also known as the Orquesta Nacional de España (ONE), is a classical music ensemble based in Madrid, Spain. Founded in 1940, the orchestra has become one of the most prestigious and renowned orchestras in Spain and Europe. The ONE was established by the Spanish government with the aim of promoting and developing classical music in the country. The orchestra's first conductor was Bartolomé Pérez Casas, who led the ensemble until 1946. Since then, the orchestra has been led by a number of distinguished conductors, including Ataúlfo Argenta, Rafael Frühbeck de Burgos, Antoni Ros-Marbà, and Josep Pons. The ONE is composed of around 100 musicians, including strings, woodwinds, brass, and percussion. The orchestra's members are selected through a rigorous audition process and come from all over the world, including Spain, Europe, and South America. Over the years, the ONE has performed a wide range of classical music repertoire, from Baroque to contemporary music. The orchestra has collaborated with many renowned soloists, conductors, and composers, including Plácido Domingo, Martha Argerich, Zubin Mehta, and Krzysztof Penderecki. One of the highlights of the ONE's history was its performance at the opening ceremony of the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona. The orchestra played a medley of Spanish music, including works by Manuel de Falla and Joaquín Rodrigo, to a global audience of millions. The ONE has also received numerous awards and accolades for its performances and recordings. In 2003, the orchestra won the National Music Prize, the highest honor for music in Spain. The ONE has also been nominated for several Grammy Awards for its recordings, including a nomination for Best Orchestral Performance in 2012 for its recording of the complete works of Manuel de Falla. In addition to its regular concert season in Madrid, the ONE has toured extensively throughout Spain and Europe, as well as in Asia and the Americas. The orchestra has performed in many prestigious venues, including the Royal Albert Hall in London, the Musikverein in Vienna, and the Carnegie Hall in New York. The ONE has also been involved in many educational and outreach programs, aimed at promoting classical music to a wider audience. The orchestra has collaborated with schools, universities, and community organizations to offer workshops, masterclasses, and concerts for young people and underserved communities. In recent years, the ONE has continued to innovate and expand its repertoire, with a focus on contemporary music and new commissions. The orchestra has premiered works by many Spanish and international composers, including Luis de Pablo, Hèctor Parra, and Magnus Lindberg. Overall, the National Orchestra of Spain has played a vital role in the development and promotion of classical music in Spain and beyond. With its world-class musicians, distinguished conductors, and diverse repertoire, the ONE has become a cultural ambassador for Spain and a leading orchestra in the international classical music scene.
