Rawicz & Landauer was a classical music ensemble consisting of two pianists, Halina Rawicz and Arthur Landauer. The duo was known for their virtuosic performances and their ability to seamlessly blend their individual styles into a cohesive sound. Halina Rawicz was born in Poland in 1921 and began playing the piano at a young age. She studied at the Warsaw Conservatory and later at the Paris Conservatory, where she met Arthur Landauer. Landauer was born in Germany in 1919 and also began playing the piano at a young age. He studied at the Berlin Conservatory before moving to Paris to continue his studies. Rawicz and Landauer first met in Paris in the early 1940s and began playing together as a duo shortly thereafter. They quickly gained a reputation for their dynamic performances and their ability to play with a single voice. In 1946, they made their debut at the Salle Pleyel in Paris, which was met with critical acclaim. Over the next few years, Rawicz & Landauer continued to perform throughout Europe, including appearances at the Edinburgh Festival and the Salzburg Festival. In 1950, they made their debut in the United States, performing at Carnegie Hall in New York City. The performance was a huge success, and the duo quickly became popular in the United States. Throughout the 1950s and 1960s, Rawicz & Landauer continued to perform and record together. They released several albums, including a recording of Chopin's complete works for piano four hands. They also performed with some of the world's leading orchestras, including the London Symphony Orchestra and the New York Philharmonic. In addition to their performances, Rawicz & Landauer were also known for their teaching. They both taught at the Paris Conservatory and later at the Juilliard School in New York City. They also gave masterclasses throughout the world, sharing their knowledge and expertise with the next generation of pianists. Rawicz & Landauer received numerous awards and honors throughout their career. In 1953, they were awarded the Grand Prix du Disque for their recording of Chopin's complete works for piano four hands. They were also awarded the Order of Merit of the Republic of Poland in 1964 for their contributions to Polish culture. Despite their success, Rawicz & Landauer decided to retire from performing in the early 1970s. They continued to teach and give masterclasses, but they no longer performed together as a duo. Halina Rawicz passed away in 2002, and Arthur Landauer passed away in 2010. Rawicz & Landauer's legacy lives on through their recordings and the many pianists they taught and influenced throughout their careers. They will always be remembered as one of the greatest piano duos of all time, known for their virtuosic performances and their ability to play as a single voice.
