The ensemble is known for its innovative and dynamic performances of contemporary classical music, as well as its commitment to promoting the works of Canadian composers. The founding members of Ensemble Repercussion were percussionists Russell Hartenberger and Beverley Johnston. Both Hartenberger and Johnston were graduates of the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York, and had a shared passion for contemporary classical music and percussion. In the early years of the ensemble, Ensemble Repercussion focused primarily on performing works by American composers such as John Cage, Steve Reich, and Philip Glass. However, as the ensemble grew and evolved, it began to incorporate more Canadian composers into its repertoire. One of the highlights of Ensemble Repercussion's early career was its performance at the 1978 Festival of New Music in Montreal. The ensemble's performance of Steve Reich's "Drumming" was particularly well-received, and helped to establish Ensemble Repercussion as one of the leading contemporary classical music ensembles in Canada. Over the years, Ensemble Repercussion has undergone several personnel changes, but has remained committed to its mission of promoting contemporary classical music and Canadian composers. Today, the ensemble is comprised of percussionists Aiyun Huang, Ben Reimer, and Ryan Scott. Ensemble Repercussion has performed at numerous festivals and concert series throughout Canada and the United States, including the Ottawa Chamber Music Festival, the Vancouver New Music Festival, and the Bang on a Can Marathon in New York City. The ensemble has also toured internationally, performing in Europe, Asia, and South America. One of the most notable performances in Ensemble Repercussion's history was its 2006 performance of John Cage's "Four3" at the Venice Biennale. The performance, which took place in the historic Teatro La Fenice, was hailed as a triumph by critics and audiences alike. Ensemble Repercussion has also been recognized for its contributions to contemporary classical music. In 1999, the ensemble was awarded the Prix Opus for "Best New Music Ensemble" by the Conseil québécois de la musique. In 2011, Ensemble Repercussion was awarded the Walter Carsen Prize for Excellence in the Performing Arts by the Canada Council for the Arts. Throughout its history, Ensemble Repercussion has remained committed to pushing the boundaries of contemporary classical music and promoting the works of Canadian composers. With its innovative performances and dedication to its mission, Ensemble Repercussion has established itself as one of the most important and influential classical music ensembles in Canada.More....
