Simone Rebello is a renowned percussionist and composer in the world of classical music. Born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on August 6, 1969, Rebello grew up in a family of musicians. Her father was a professional drummer, and her mother was a pianist. Rebello started playing percussion at the age of six and quickly showed a natural talent for the instrument. Rebello's family moved to England when she was ten years old, and she continued her musical education there. She attended the Royal College of Music in London, where she studied percussion with James Blades and Michael Skinner. She also studied composition with Edwin Roxburgh and Joseph Horovitz. After completing her studies, Rebello began her professional career as a percussionist. She quickly established herself as one of the leading percussionists in the UK, performing with many of the country's top orchestras and ensembles. She also became a sought-after soloist, performing recitals and concertos throughout the UK and Europe. One of Rebello's early highlights was her performance of the marimba concerto "Concerto for Marimba and Strings" by Emmanuel Séjourné with the London Symphony Orchestra in 1993. The performance was a critical success, and Rebello was praised for her virtuosic playing and musicality. Rebello's career continued to flourish throughout the 1990s and 2000s. She performed with many of the world's top orchestras, including the BBC Symphony Orchestra, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, and the London Philharmonic Orchestra. She also collaborated with many of the leading composers of the day, including Steve Reich, Michael Nyman, and Mark-Anthony Turnage. In addition to her work as a performer, Rebello also became a respected composer. She has written many works for percussion, including solo pieces, chamber music, and concertos. Her compositions have been performed by many of the world's top percussionists, and she has received commissions from a wide range of organizations, including the BBC, the Royal Philharmonic Society, and the London Symphony Orchestra. One of Rebello's most significant achievements as a composer was the creation of her own percussion ensemble, the Simone Rebello Ensemble. The ensemble was founded in 2003 and quickly established itself as one of the leading percussion groups in the UK. The group has performed throughout the UK and Europe, and has released several critically acclaimed recordings. Rebello's career has been marked by many awards and honors. In 1992, she won the Royal Overseas League Music Competition, which helped to launch her career as a soloist. She has also won several awards for her compositions, including the British Composer Award in 2007 for her work "The Shipping Forecast." In addition to her work as a performer and composer, Rebello is also a respected teacher. She has taught at many of the UK's top music schools, including the Royal College of Music, the Royal Northern College of Music, and the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. She has also given masterclasses and workshops throughout the UK and Europe, and has been a guest lecturer at many universities and conservatories.
