Chor des Reichssenders Königsberg was a classical music ensemble that was founded in 1927 in Königsberg, Germany. The ensemble was established by the Reichssender Königsberg, a radio station that was part of the German Broadcasting Corporation. The choir was initially formed to perform on the radio station's programs, but it quickly gained a reputation for its exceptional performances and became one of the most renowned choirs in Germany. The choir was led by several notable conductors throughout its history, including Fritz Lubrich, Hans Schreiber, and Kurt Thomas. Lubrich was the choir's first conductor and led the ensemble until 1933. Under his leadership, the choir gained a reputation for its exceptional performances of works by Bach, Handel, and Mozart. Schreiber took over as conductor in 1933 and led the choir until 1945. During his tenure, the choir continued to perform at a high level and gained international recognition for its performances of works by Brahms, Schubert, and Schumann. Thomas became the choir's conductor in 1945 and led the ensemble until 1956. He was known for his innovative programming and his commitment to performing contemporary music. Under his leadership, the choir premiered works by several notable composers, including Paul Hindemith and Carl Orff. The choir's membership consisted of some of the most talented singers in Germany. Many of the choir's members went on to have successful careers as soloists and conductors. Notable members of the choir included soprano Elisabeth Schwarzkopf, tenor Peter Anders, and baritone Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau. The choir's performances were highly acclaimed and it received numerous awards throughout its history. In 1936, the choir won first prize at the International Music Festival in Vienna. The following year, it won first prize at the International Music Festival in Paris. In 1950, the choir was awarded the National Prize of East Germany for its contributions to the country's cultural life. One of the choir's most notable performances took place in 1942, when it performed Bach's Mass in B Minor at the Berlin Philharmonic Hall. The performance was attended by high-ranking Nazi officials, including Joseph Goebbels and Hermann Göring. Despite the political climate of the time, the choir's performance was widely praised for its musical excellence. The choir's legacy continued after its dissolution in 1956. Many of its former members went on to establish successful careers in the music industry, and the ensemble's recordings continue to be highly regarded by music enthusiasts and scholars alike. The Chor des Reichssenders Königsberg remains an important part of Germany's rich musical heritage.
