Layfield grew up in a family of musicians, and his parents were both professional musicians. His father was a violinist, and his mother was a pianist. Layfield's parents played a significant role in his early musical education, and he started playing the violin at the age of six. Layfield attended Chetham's School of Music in Manchester, where he received his early musical training. He later went on to study at the Royal Northern College of Music, where he received a Bachelor of Music degree. Layfield continued his studies at the Royal Academy of Music in London, where he received a Postgraduate Diploma in Performance. Layfield's career as a professional musician began in 1984 when he joined the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra as a violinist.
