The orchestra was founded in 1889 as the Arnhem Philharmonic Society, and it has since become one of the most prominent orchestras in the country. The ensemble's founding can be traced back to a group of music enthusiasts in the city of Arnhem who came together to form a symphony orchestra. The group was led by conductor Willem Kes, who served as the orchestra's first music director. Under Kes' leadership, the orchestra quickly gained a reputation for its high-quality performances and innovative programming. Over the years, the orchestra has undergone several name changes and leadership transitions. In 1949, the ensemble was renamed the Gelders Orkest, reflecting its status as the official orchestra of the province of Gelderland. The orchestra has also had a number of notable music directors, including Jaap van Zweden, who served from 1994 to 2005. Today, the Gelders Orkest is led by conductor Antonello Manacorda, who was appointed as the orchestra's chief conductor in 2018. Manacorda is known for his dynamic and expressive conducting style, and he has worked with some of the world's leading orchestras and opera companies. The Gelders Orkest is made up of around 60 musicians, including some of the most talented instrumentalists in the Netherlands and beyond. The ensemble performs a wide range of classical music, from Baroque and Classical works to contemporary compositions. One of the highlights of the Gelders Orkest's history was its performance at the 1954 Holland Festival, where it premiered a new work by Dutch composer Henk Badings. The piece, titled Symphony No. 10, was a groundbreaking work that incorporated electronic music into a symphonic context. The performance was a huge success, and it helped to establish the Gelders Orkest as a leading force in contemporary music. In addition to its innovative programming, the Gelders Orkest has also been recognized for its outstanding performances of more traditional repertoire. The ensemble has won numerous awards and accolades over the years, including the Dutch Music Prize in 1996 and the Edison Classical Music Award in 2003. Some of the Gelders Orkest's most memorable performances have included collaborations with world-renowned soloists and conductors. In 2016, the orchestra performed Beethoven's Symphony No. 9 with conductor Iván Fischer and the Budapest Festival Orchestra, earning rave reviews for its powerful and emotional interpretation of the work. The Gelders Orkest has also been a champion of contemporary music, commissioning and premiering new works by a number of prominent composers. In 2019, the ensemble premiered a new piece by Dutch composer Joey Roukens, titled Boundless, which was inspired by the natural beauty of the Gelderland region. Despite its long and storied history, the Gelders Orkest remains committed to pushing the boundaries of classical music and engaging with new audiences. The ensemble regularly performs in venues throughout the Netherlands and beyond, and it has also embraced digital technology as a way to reach new listeners. Overall, the Gelders Orkest is a testament to the enduring power of classical music and the importance of artistic innovation. With its talented musicians, visionary leadership, and commitment to excellence, the ensemble is sure to continue making an impact on the world of classical music for years to come.More....
