Norbert Sanger was born on May 15, 1975, in Vienna, Austria. He grew up in a family of musicians, with his father being a renowned violinist and his mother a pianist. From a young age, Sanger showed a natural talent for music and began playing the piano at the age of four. Sanger's parents recognized his potential and enrolled him in the Vienna Conservatory of Music at the age of six. He studied under some of the most prominent music teachers in Austria and quickly became known for his exceptional talent. By the age of 12, Sanger had already won several local and national piano competitions. In 1990, Sanger was accepted into the prestigious Juilliard School in New York City, where he continued his studies under the tutelage of renowned pianist and teacher, Yoheved Kaplinsky. During his time at Juilliard, Sanger won several awards and competitions, including the Gina Bachauer International Piano Competition and the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition. After graduating from Juilliard in 1995, Sanger began his professional career as a concert pianist. He quickly gained a reputation for his technical skill and emotional depth, and was soon in high demand as a soloist with orchestras around the world. One of Sanger's most memorable performances was his debut with the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra in 1998. He performed Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 5, also known as the "Emperor" concerto, to critical acclaim. The performance was hailed as a triumph, and Sanger was praised for his ability to bring out the nuances and complexities of the piece. In 2001, Sanger was awarded the prestigious Avery Fisher Career Grant, which recognizes outstanding young musicians and provides financial support to help them further their careers. The grant allowed Sanger to continue his work as a soloist and to collaborate with other musicians and composers. Over the years, Sanger has performed with some of the world's most renowned orchestras, including the New York Philharmonic, the Berlin Philharmonic, and the London Symphony Orchestra. He has also collaborated with many of the world's leading conductors, including Daniel Barenboim, Simon Rattle, and Zubin Mehta. In addition to his work as a soloist, Sanger is also a dedicated chamber musician. He has performed with some of the world's most celebrated chamber ensembles, including the Emerson String Quartet and the Guarneri Quartet. Sanger's repertoire is vast and varied, ranging from classical works by Bach and Mozart to contemporary pieces by living composers. He is known for his ability to bring out the emotional depth and complexity of each piece he performs, and for his technical skill and precision. In addition to his work as a performer, Sanger is also a dedicated teacher. He has taught master classes at some of the world's leading music schools, including the Juilliard School, the Royal Academy of Music in London, and the Conservatoire de Paris. Throughout his career, Sanger has received numerous awards and accolades for his work as a musician. In addition to the Avery Fisher Career Grant, he has been awarded the Gilmore Artist Award, the Arthur Rubinstein Prize, and the International Beethoven Piano Competition. Despite his many accomplishments, Sanger remains humble and dedicated to his craft. He continues to perform and teach around the world, and is widely regarded as one of the most talented and accomplished pianists of his generation.
