Johannes Verhulst was a Dutch composer and conductor who lived from 1816 to 1891. He was born in The Hague, Netherlands, on March 19, 1816, to a family of musicians. His father, Abraham Verhulst, was a composer and conductor, and his mother, Johanna van der Hagen, was a singer. Johannes Verhulst showed an early interest in music and began studying the piano and violin at a young age. Verhulst's musical education continued at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague, where he studied composition with Johann Heinrich Lübeck and violin with Charles Auguste de Bériot. He also studied conducting with Felix Mendelssohn in Leipzig, Germany. Verhulst's talent as a composer was recognized early on, and he won several prizes for his compositions while still a student. After completing his studies, Verhulst began his career as a conductor. He was appointed conductor of the Amsterdam Toonkunst Choir in 1842, a position he held for over 30 years. He also conducted the Amsterdam Philharmonic Society and the Rotterdam Philharmonic Society. Verhulst was known for his meticulous attention to detail and his ability to bring out the best in his performers. As a composer, Verhulst was influenced by the German Romantic tradition, particularly the music of Mendelssohn and Schumann. His compositions are characterized by their lyrical melodies, rich harmonies, and elegant orchestration. Verhulst's most famous work is his Symphony No. 1 in E minor, which was premiered in Amsterdam in 1845. The symphony is a masterpiece of the Romantic era, with its sweeping melodies and dramatic contrasts. Verhulst's other notable works include his Overture in C minor, his String Quartet in D minor, and his choral works, including his oratorio Saul and his cantata The Bride of Messina. Verhulst was also a prolific composer of songs, many of which were written for his wife, the soprano Geertruida van Oosten. Verhulst's career as a conductor and composer was not without its challenges. He struggled with depression and anxiety throughout his life, and his health was often fragile. He also faced criticism from some quarters for his conservative musical style, which was seen by some as old-fashioned in an era of increasing experimentation and innovation. Despite these challenges, Verhulst remained a respected and influential figure in Dutch music throughout his life. He was awarded the Order of the Netherlands Lion in 1866 and was made a Knight of the Order of Orange-Nassau in 1885. Verhulst died in Bloemendaal, Netherlands, on January 17, 1891, at the age of 74. Today, Verhulst is remembered as one of the most important composers and conductors of the Romantic era in the Netherlands.
