Nicolas Johansen is a renowned classical music artist who has made a significant impact in the world of music. Born in Oslo, Norway, in 1985, Johansen showed an early interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of six. His parents, who were both musicians, recognized his talent and encouraged him to pursue his passion for music. Johansen's musical education began at the Barratt Due Institute of Music in Oslo, where he studied under the tutelage of renowned pianist and pedagogue Einar Steen-Nøkleberg. He later went on to study at the Royal College of Music in London, where he received a Bachelor of Music degree with first-class honors. Johansen continued his studies at the Juilliard School in New York, where he earned a Master of Music degree. Johansen's talent as a pianist was evident from an early age, and he quickly gained recognition for his exceptional skills. He won his first major competition at the age of 12, when he was awarded first prize in the Norwegian National Piano Competition. This was followed by numerous other awards and accolades, including first prize in the International Piano Competition in Rome and the Gina Bachauer International Piano Competition in Salt Lake City. Johansen's performances have been praised for their technical brilliance and emotional depth. He has performed with some of the world's leading orchestras, including the London Symphony Orchestra, the New York Philharmonic, and the Berlin Philharmonic. He has also given recitals in some of the world's most prestigious concert halls, including Carnegie Hall in New York, the Royal Albert Hall in London, and the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam. One of Johansen's most memorable performances was his debut with the Berlin Philharmonic in 2010. He performed Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 5, also known as the "Emperor" concerto, to critical acclaim. The Berliner Zeitung praised Johansen's "brilliant technique and profound musicality," while the Berliner Morgenpost described his performance as "a revelation." Johansen has also been recognized for his recordings, which have received numerous awards and nominations. His recording of Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 2 with the London Symphony Orchestra was nominated for a Grammy Award in 2012. He has also recorded works by Chopin, Liszt, and Schumann, among others. In addition to his performing career, Johansen is also a dedicated teacher. He has taught masterclasses at some of the world's leading music schools, including the Juilliard School, the Royal College of Music, and the Conservatoire de Paris. He is currently a professor of piano at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater in Munich. Johansen's musical achievements have been recognized with numerous awards and honors. In 2011, he was awarded the prestigious Avery Fisher Career Grant, which recognizes outstanding young musicians and provides financial support to further their careers. He was also named a Steinway Artist in 2012, joining a select group of pianists who are recognized for their exceptional talent and dedication to the instrument. Despite his many accomplishments, Johansen remains humble and dedicated to his craft. He continues to perform and record, always striving to improve and push the boundaries of his art.
