Désiré-Emile Inghelbrecht was a French conductor and composer who was born on September 17, 1880, in Paris, France. He was the son of a Belgian father and a French mother. Inghelbrecht showed an early interest in music and began studying the piano at the age of six. He later studied composition with Vincent d'Indy and conducting with Felix Mottl. In 1908, Inghelbrecht made his debut as a conductor with the Concerts Colonne in Paris. He quickly gained a reputation as a skilled conductor and was appointed as the conductor of the Orchestre Symphonique de Paris in 1914. Inghelbrecht remained with the orchestra until 1940, when he was forced to flee Paris due to the German occupation. During his time with the Orchestre Symphonique de Paris, Inghelbrecht conducted many premieres of works by French composers, including Maurice Ravel, Claude Debussy, and Albert Roussel. He was also a champion of the music of Hector Berlioz and conducted many performances of his works. In addition to his work with the Orchestre Symphonique de Paris, Inghelbrecht was a frequent guest conductor with orchestras throughout Europe and the United States. He conducted the New York Philharmonic in 1925 and 1926 and the Boston Symphony Orchestra in 1927. Inghelbrecht was also a composer and wrote music in a variety of genres, including orchestral works, chamber music, and opera. His most famous work is the ballet Les Biches, which was premiered by the Ballets Russes in 1924. The ballet was a huge success and helped to establish Inghelbrecht's reputation as a composer. In addition to his work as a conductor and composer, Inghelbrecht was also a musicologist and wrote extensively on the music of Berlioz and other French composers. He was a member of the Académie des Beaux-Arts and was awarded the Legion of Honor in 1935. Inghelbrecht continued to conduct and compose music throughout his life. He died on February 14, 1965, in Deauville, France, at the age of 84. His legacy as a conductor, composer, and musicologist continues to be celebrated today.
