He also received instruction in conducting from Arthur Nikisch, who was one of the most prominent conductors of the time. Stock's talent and dedication to his craft quickly became apparent, and he was soon appointed as Nikisch's assistant at the Leipzig Opera. In 1899, Stock was appointed as the conductor of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, which was one of the most prestigious orchestras in Europe at the time. He held this position for 22 years, during which time he established himself as one of the most respected conductors of his generation. Stock was known for his meticulous attention to detail and his ability to bring out the best in his musicians, which resulted in many memorable performances.
