Founded in 1960, the orchestra has established itself as one of the leading chamber orchestras in the world, known for its exceptional musicianship and innovative programming. The RSKO was founded by conductor and violinist Eric Ericson, who served as its first artistic director. Ericson was a prominent figure in the Swedish music scene, having founded the Eric Ericson Chamber Choir and the Swedish Radio Choir. He envisioned the RSKO as a platform for showcasing the talents of Sweden's finest musicians and promoting the country's rich musical heritage. The orchestra's early years were marked by a series of successful tours and recordings, which helped to establish its reputation as a world-class ensemble. In 1962, the RSKO made its international debut at the Edinburgh Festival, where it received critical acclaim for its performances of works by Mozart, Haydn, and Beethoven. The following year, the orchestra embarked on a tour of the United States, performing in major cities such as New York, Boston, and Chicago. Over the years, the RSKO has collaborated with some of the world's most renowned conductors and soloists, including Sir Neville Marriner, Yo-Yo Ma, and Anne-Sophie Mutter. The orchestra has also commissioned and premiered numerous works by contemporary composers, such as Anders Hillborg and Tobias Broström. One of the RSKO's most notable achievements was its participation in the Nobel Prize Award Ceremony in 1998. The orchestra performed a specially commissioned work by Swedish composer Sven-David Sandström, which was broadcast to millions of viewers around the world. The RSKO has also been recognized for its outstanding recordings, having won several prestigious awards over the years. In 1991, the orchestra received a Grammy Award for its recording of Mozart's Piano Concertos Nos. 20 and 21 with pianist Mitsuko Uchida. The following year, the RSKO won a Gramophone Award for its recording of Beethoven's Symphony No. 9 with conductor John Eliot Gardiner. The RSKO's current artistic director is violinist Malin Broman, who took over the position in 2018. Broman is a highly acclaimed musician in her own right, having performed as a soloist with orchestras such as the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and the BBC Symphony Orchestra. The RSKO continues to be a major force in the classical music world, with a busy schedule of concerts and recordings. The orchestra's commitment to excellence and innovation ensures that it will remain a vital part of the Swedish cultural landscape for years to come.More....
