Born in London, England, on May 14, 1952, Wallfisch was raised in a family of musicians. His father, Peter Wallfisch Sr., was a well-known pianist, and his mother, Anita Lasker-Wallfisch, was a cellist who survived the Holocaust and played in the Women's Orchestra of Auschwitz. Wallfisch began his musical training at an early age, studying piano with his father and cello with his mother. He showed exceptional talent and was soon recognized as a prodigy. At the age of 11, he made his debut as a soloist with the London Philharmonic Orchestra, performing Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 20 in D minor. Wallfisch continued his musical education at the Royal College of Music in London, where he studied piano with Cyril Smith and cello with Amaryllis Fleming. He also received guidance from renowned musicians such as Benjamin Britten, Mstislav Rostropovich, and Jacqueline du Pré. In 1972, Wallfisch won the prestigious Leeds International Piano Competition, which launched his career as a soloist. He went on to perform with major orchestras around the world, including the London Symphony Orchestra, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, the Berlin Philharmonic, and the New York Philharmonic. Wallfisch's repertoire is vast and includes works by composers such as Bach, Beethoven, Brahms, Chopin, Liszt, Mozart, Schubert, and Schumann. He is particularly known for his interpretations of the works of Robert Schumann, and has recorded the complete piano works of Schumann for the Nimbus label. In addition to his solo career, Wallfisch is also a sought-after chamber musician. He has collaborated with many renowned musicians, including violinist Nigel Kennedy, cellist Steven Isserlis, and pianist Peter Donohoe. He is a founding member of the London Schubert Players, a chamber ensemble dedicated to the works of Franz Schubert. Wallfisch has received numerous awards and honors throughout his career. In addition to his win at the Leeds International Piano Competition, he has been awarded the Royal Philharmonic Society's Instrumentalist of the Year award, the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany, and an Honorary Doctorate from the University of Leeds. Wallfisch is also a respected teacher and has taught at the Royal College of Music, the Royal Northern College of Music, and the Hochschule für Musik und Theater Hannover.
