His parents were both musicians, and they encouraged him to pursue music from a young age. Walter showed a natural talent for music, and he began playing the piano at the age of five. Walter's parents recognized his talent and enrolled him in the Vienna Conservatory of Music when he was just seven years old. He studied under some of the most prominent music teachers of the time, including Franz Schmidt and Richard Robert. Walter's dedication and hard work paid off, and he graduated from the conservatory with top honors. After completing his studies, Walter began performing in concerts across Europe. He quickly gained a reputation as a talented pianist, and his performances were highly acclaimed. In 1948, he won the prestigious Geneva International Music Competition, which helped to launch his career. Over the next few years, Walter continued to perform in concerts across Europe and the United States. He played with some of the most renowned orchestras, including the Vienna Philharmonic, the Berlin Philharmonic, and the New York Philharmonic. His performances were always well-received, and he quickly became one of the most sought-after pianists of his time. In 1956, Walter was invited to perform at the Salzburg Festival, one of the most prestigious music festivals in the world. His performance was a huge success, and he was invited back to perform at the festival for several years. He also performed at other major music festivals, including the Edinburgh Festival and the Tanglewood Music Festival. Walter's talent and dedication to music were recognized with numerous awards and honors throughout his career. In 1962, he was awarded the Grand Prix du Disque for his recording of Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 5. He was also awarded the Austrian Cross of Honor for Science and Art in 1975 and the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany in 1985. Despite his success, Walter remained humble and dedicated to his craft. He continued to perform in concerts and record music well into his later years. He was known for his technical skill and his ability to bring out the emotional depth of the music he played. Walter Gleisle passed away on 14th December 1996, at the age of 71.
