Andrew Gant is a British composer, conductor, and academic who has made significant contributions to the world of classical music. Born in 1963 in Cambridge, England, Gant showed an early interest in music and began playing the piano at a young age. He went on to study music at the University of Oxford, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in music and a Master of Arts degree in musicology. After completing his studies, Gant began his career as a conductor and composer. He served as the conductor of the Oxford Bach Choir from 1992 to 1997, and during this time he also worked as a freelance composer and arranger. Gant's early compositions were largely choral works, and he quickly gained a reputation for his skill in writing for voices. In 1997, Gant was appointed as the Organist and Master of the Choristers at the Chapel Royal, St. James's Palace in London. This prestigious position put him in charge of the music for the royal family's private chapel, and he quickly became one of the most respected musicians in the country. During his time at the Chapel Royal, Gant composed a number of works for the royal family, including a setting of the Lord's Prayer that was performed at the wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton in 2011. In addition to his work at the Chapel Royal, Gant has also served as the Director of Music at the University of St. Andrews in Scotland and as the Director of Music at the Choir of Her Majesty's Chapel Royal at the Tower of London. He has conducted numerous orchestras and choirs throughout the UK and has been a guest conductor at the Royal Opera House in London. Gant's compositions are known for their intricate harmonies and lush textures. He has written works for a variety of ensembles, including orchestras, choirs, and chamber groups. Some of his most notable works include "The Song of Simeon," a choral work based on the biblical story of Simeon, and "The Wedding Anthem," a piece that was commissioned for the wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton. In addition to his work as a composer and conductor, Gant is also an accomplished academic. He has written several books on music, including "O Sing Unto the Lord: A History of English Church Music" and "The Carols of Christmas: A Celebration of the Surprising Stories Behind Your Favorite Holiday Songs." He has also served as a professor of music at the University of Oxford and the University of St. Andrews. Throughout his career, Gant has received numerous awards and honors for his contributions to the world of classical music. In 2011, he was awarded the MBE (Member of the Order of the British Empire) for his services to music, and in 2016 he was appointed as a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts. Today, Gant continues to compose, conduct, and teach music. He is widely regarded as one of the most talented and influential musicians of his generation, and his works continue to be performed and celebrated by audiences around the world.
