London Camerata is a classical music ensemble that was founded in 1975 by cellist and conductor, Sir Neville Marriner. The ensemble is known for its exceptional performances of baroque and classical music, and has become one of the most respected chamber orchestras in the world. The founding of London Camerata was a result of Sir Neville Marriner's desire to create a chamber orchestra that would perform music from the baroque and classical periods. Marriner, who was already a well-known conductor and cellist, had previously founded the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields, which had become one of the most successful chamber orchestras in the world. However, Marriner wanted to create a smaller ensemble that would focus exclusively on the music of the baroque and classical periods. The ensemble's main members have changed over the years, but the core of the group has always been made up of some of the finest musicians in the world. Some of the most notable members of London Camerata have included violinists Iona Brown and Joshua Bell, cellist Yo-Yo Ma, and pianist Murray Perahia. London Camerata has performed all over the world, and has received numerous awards and accolades for its exceptional performances. Some of the ensemble's most notable performances include its 1984 performance at the Royal Albert Hall in London, where it performed Handel's Messiah to a sold-out crowd. The ensemble has also performed at the Salzburg Festival, the Edinburgh Festival, and the BBC Proms. In addition to its live performances, London Camerata has also recorded numerous albums, many of which have received critical acclaim. Some of the ensemble's most notable recordings include its 1983 recording of Vivaldi's Four Seasons, which was conducted by Marriner and featured violinist Iona Brown. The recording was a commercial success, and helped to establish London Camerata as one of the premier chamber orchestras in the world. Over the years, London Camerata has received numerous awards and accolades for its exceptional performances. In 1986, the ensemble was awarded the Gramophone Award for Best Chamber Music Recording for its recording of Mozart's Piano Concertos Nos. 20 and 21, which featured pianist Murray Perahia. The ensemble has also been awarded the Diapason d'Or, the Edison Award, and the Grand Prix du Disque. Despite its many accomplishments, London Camerata remains committed to its original mission of performing the music of the baroque and classical periods. The ensemble continues to tour and record, and its performances are still considered some of the finest in the world.
