The quartet was formed in 2001 and is composed of violinists Nelson Lee and Meg Freivogel, violist Liz Freivogel (Meg's sister), and cellist Daniel McDonough. The members of the Jupiter String Quartet first met as students at the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston. They quickly discovered a shared passion for chamber music and began playing together as a quartet. The group took its name from the planet Jupiter, which is known for its size and beauty, as well as its significance in astrology and mythology. The Jupiter String Quartet quickly gained recognition for their exceptional musicianship and innovative programming. They won the grand prize at the 2004 Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition, one of the most prestigious chamber music competitions in the world. This victory helped to launch their career and led to performances at major concert halls and festivals around the world. One of the highlights of the Jupiter String Quartet's career was their residency at the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center in New York City. From 2007 to 2010, the quartet served as the Society's Young Artists in Residence, performing a series of concerts and collaborating with some of the world's most renowned chamber musicians. The Jupiter String Quartet has also been recognized for their commitment to contemporary music. They have commissioned and premiered works by some of today's most exciting composers, including Kati Agócs, Pierre Jalbert, and Dan Visconti. In 2011, they released a critically acclaimed album of works by the American composer Steven Stucky, which was nominated for a Grammy Award. In addition to their performances and recordings, the Jupiter String Quartet is also committed to music education. They have served as faculty members at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign since 2012, where they teach chamber music and work with young musicians. They also regularly give masterclasses and workshops at schools and universities around the world. The Jupiter String Quartet's performances are known for their technical precision, emotional depth, and innovative programming. They have performed at major concert halls and festivals around the world, including Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, the Wigmore Hall in London, and the Berlin Konzerthaus.
