The Fairmount String Quartet is a renowned classical music ensemble based in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The quartet was founded in 1984 by four talented musicians who shared a passion for chamber music and a desire to bring their art to audiences throughout the region. The founding members of the Fairmount String Quartet were violinists Rachel Segal and Leah Nelson, violist Beth Dzwil, and cellist Mimi Morris-Kim. All four musicians had extensive training and experience in classical music, having studied at some of the most prestigious music schools in the country. From the beginning, the Fairmount String Quartet was committed to performing a wide range of classical music, from the works of the great masters to contemporary compositions. The quartet quickly gained a reputation for their technical skill, musical sensitivity, and engaging performances. Over the years, the Fairmount String Quartet has performed at some of the most prestigious venues in the region, including the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and the Barnes Foundation. They have also been featured on numerous radio and television programs, including WHYY's "On Stage at Curtis" and WRTI's "Crossover." One of the highlights of the Fairmount String Quartet's career was their performance at the 2008 Democratic National Convention in Denver, Colorado. The quartet was invited to perform at a reception hosted by the Pennsylvania delegation, where they played a selection of classical and contemporary pieces to an enthusiastic audience. In addition to their performances, the Fairmount String Quartet has also been recognized for their contributions to the classical music community. They have received numerous awards and grants, including the prestigious Pew Fellowship in the Arts, which recognizes outstanding artists in the Philadelphia region. The Fairmount String Quartet has also been committed to education and outreach, working with schools and community organizations to bring classical music to a wider audience. They have conducted master classes and workshops for students of all ages, and have performed in a variety of settings, from nursing homes to prisons. Despite changes in personnel over the years, the Fairmount String Quartet has remained true to their original vision of bringing the beauty and power of classical music to audiences throughout the region. They continue to perform regularly, and are widely regarded as one of the finest classical music ensembles in the country.
