From a young age, Skillen showed a natural talent for music, and he began playing the piano at the age of four. As a child, Skillen was enrolled in the Royal Irish Academy of Music, where he received formal training in piano performance. He quickly distinguished himself as a prodigious talent, winning numerous awards and competitions throughout his youth. In 2003, Skillen was accepted into the prestigious Juilliard School in New York City, where he continued his studies under the tutelage of renowned pianist Emanuel Ax.
