Geneviève Tschumi is a Swiss classical pianist who has gained international recognition for her virtuosic performances and musical interpretations. Born in Lausanne, Switzerland in 1987, Tschumi began playing the piano at the age of five and quickly showed a natural talent for the instrument. She received her first piano lessons from her mother, who was also a pianist, and later studied with renowned teachers such as Maria João Pires and Murray Perahia. Tschumi's musical education began at the Conservatoire de Lausanne, where she studied with Christian Favre and obtained her diploma with honors at the age of 18. She then continued her studies at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater in Munich, Germany, where she studied with Gerhard Oppitz and received her Master's degree with distinction. Tschumi also participated in masterclasses with distinguished pianists such as András Schiff, Menahem Pressler, and Mitsuko Uchida, among others. Tschumi's career as a concert pianist began to take off in the early 2010s, when she won several international competitions, including the Geneva International Music Competition, the Géza Anda Competition in Zurich, and the Concours Clara Haskil in Vevey. These victories brought her to the attention of major concert halls and orchestras around the world, and she began to perform regularly in Europe, Asia, and North America. One of Tschumi's most notable performances took place in 2014, when she made her debut at the Lucerne Festival in Switzerland, one of the most prestigious classical music festivals in the world. She performed Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 4 with the Lucerne Festival Orchestra under the baton of Andris Nelsons, receiving critical acclaim for her "poetic and sensitive" interpretation of the work. Tschumi has since returned to the Lucerne Festival several times, performing with orchestras such as the Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich and the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra. Tschumi has also collaborated with many other leading orchestras and conductors, including the London Philharmonic Orchestra, the Orchestre de Paris, the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra, and the Boston Symphony Orchestra. She has worked with conductors such as Bernard Haitink, Daniel Harding, and Riccardo Chailly, among others. Tschumi's repertoire is wide-ranging and includes works by composers such as Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Schumann, Chopin, Debussy, and Ravel, among others. In addition to her career as a concert pianist, Tschumi is also a dedicated chamber musician. She has performed with many renowned musicians, including cellist Gautier Capuçon, violinist Renaud Capuçon, and clarinetist Martin Fröst, among others. Tschumi is a member of the Trio Rafale, a piano trio that she founded with violinist Mi-Sa Yang and cellist Sébastien van Kuijk. The trio has performed extensively in Europe and Asia and has recorded several albums, including a critically acclaimed recording of works by Ravel, Fauré, and Debussy. Tschumi has received numerous awards and honors throughout her career. In addition to her competition victories, she was awarded the Prix Credit Suisse Jeunes Solistes in 2011, which included a cash prize and a series of concerts in Switzerland. She was also named a BBC New Generation Artist in 2015, which provided her with opportunities to perform and record with the BBC orchestras and ensembles.
