Tiburtina Ensemble is a classical music ensemble that specializes in performing medieval and Renaissance music. The ensemble was founded in 1992 by its current artistic director, Barbora Kabátková, in the Czech Republic. Kabátková, a trained musicologist and singer, had a passion for early music and wanted to create an ensemble that would explore the rich repertoire of medieval and Renaissance music. She gathered a group of like-minded musicians and formed Tiburtina Ensemble, named after the ancient Roman town of Tibur (modern-day Tivoli), which was known for its musical culture. The ensemble's core members include Kabátková as the artistic director and soprano, along with Jana Semerádová on the recorder, Kateřina Ghannudi on the harp, and Petr Wagner on the lute and guitar. Over the years, the ensemble has collaborated with a number of other musicians and vocalists, depending on the repertoire being performed. Tiburtina Ensemble has gained a reputation for its authentic and historically informed performances of medieval and Renaissance music. The ensemble uses period instruments and follows the performance practices of the time, including using improvisation and ornamentation. One of the highlights of Tiburtina Ensemble's career was its performance at the Prague Spring International Music Festival in 1996. The ensemble performed a program of medieval and Renaissance music, including works by Guillaume de Machaut, Francesco Landini, and Johannes Ciconia. The performance was well-received by both audiences and critics, and helped to establish Tiburtina Ensemble as a leading ensemble in the early music scene. In 2000, Tiburtina Ensemble released its first album, "Music from the Time of Charles IV," which featured music from the 14th century, the time of the Holy Roman Emperor Charles IV. The album was praised for its authenticity and attention to detail, and helped to further establish the ensemble's reputation. Since then, Tiburtina Ensemble has released several more albums, including "Music from the Time of Jan Hus" (2003), "Music from the Time of the Hussite Wars" (2005), and "Music from the Time of Rudolf II" (2012). The ensemble's recordings have received critical acclaim and have been featured on radio programs and in music publications. In addition to its recordings, Tiburtina Ensemble has performed at numerous festivals and concert series throughout Europe, including the Festival Oude Muziek in Utrecht, the Tage Alter Musik in Regensburg, and the Festival de Musique Ancienne de Callas in France. The ensemble has also toured in the United States, Canada, and Japan. Tiburtina Ensemble has received several awards and honors for its performances and recordings. In 2003, the ensemble was awarded the Czech Music Council Prize for its contribution to the promotion of Czech music. In 2005, the ensemble received the prestigious Diapason d'Or award for its recording of "Music from the Time of the Hussite Wars." The ensemble has also been nominated for several other awards, including the BBC Music Magazine Award and the Gramophone Award. Today, Tiburtina Ensemble continues to be a leading ensemble in the early music scene, known for its authentic and historically informed performances of medieval and Renaissance music. The ensemble's recordings and performances have helped to bring this rich repertoire to a wider audience, and have inspired a new generation of musicians and music lovers to explore the music of the past.
