Artist Info
Milka Ternina was a renowned Croatian soprano who was born on June 19, 1863, in the small village of Donja Stubica, Croatia. She was the daughter of a local schoolteacher and grew up in a musical family. Her father was a choir director and her mother was a singer, so it was no surprise that Milka showed an early interest in music. Milka began her musical education at the age of 12 when she started taking piano lessons. However, it was her singing voice that truly stood out. She began taking singing lessons with a local teacher and quickly developed a powerful and expressive voice. Her talent was recognized by the famous Croatian composer Ivan Zajc, who invited her to study at the Zagreb Music Academy. After completing her studies in Zagreb, Milka moved to Vienna to continue her training. She studied with some of the most renowned vocal teachers of the time, including Mathilde Marchesi and Julius Stockhausen. Her hard work and dedication paid off, and she made her professional debut in 1887 at the Vienna Court Opera as Leonora in Verdi's "Il Trovatore." Milka's performance was a huge success, and she quickly became one of the most sought-after sopranos in Europe. She performed in all the major opera houses, including the Royal Opera House in London, La Scala in Milan, and the Metropolitan Opera in New York. Her repertoire included a wide range of roles, from Mozart's "The Magic Flute" to Wagner's "Tristan und Isolde." One of Milka's most memorable performances was in 1896 when she sang the role of Brünnhilde in Wagner's "Die Walküre" at the Bayreuth Festival. This was a significant achievement for Milka, as she was the first non-German singer to perform the role at the festival. Her performance was widely praised, and she became known as one of the greatest Wagnerian sopranos of her time. Milka's success was not limited to the opera stage. She was also a highly sought-after concert singer and performed in many of the world's most prestigious concert halls. She was particularly renowned for her interpretations of the works of Brahms, Schumann, and Schubert. Throughout her career, Milka received numerous awards and honors. In 1900, she was awarded the title of Kammersängerin by the Austrian Emperor Franz Joseph I, which was a significant honor for a singer. She was also awarded the Order of Franz Joseph and the Order of the Iron Crown for her contributions to music. Milka's career spanned over three decades, and she retired from the stage in 1918. However, she continued to teach and mentor young singers until her death in 1941. Her legacy lives on through her recordings, which are still highly regarded by music lovers today. In conclusion, Milka Ternina was a remarkable soprano who achieved great success during her career. Her powerful and expressive voice, combined with her hard work and dedication, made her one of the most sought-after singers of her time.
