Her parents were both musicians, and they encouraged her to pursue music from a young age. Helen showed a keen interest in music and started playing the piano when she was just five years old. Helen's parents recognized her talent and enrolled her in a music school where she received formal training in piano and music theory. She showed exceptional skills and quickly progressed through the grades. By the time she was a teenager, Helen had already won several local music competitions. In 1968, Helen was accepted into the Royal Academy of Music in London, where she studied under the guidance of renowned pianist and composer, John Lill. She excelled in her studies and graduated with honors in 1972. After completing her studies, Helen started performing in various concerts and recitals across the UK. Helen's talent and dedication to music soon caught the attention of music critics and enthusiasts. In 1975, she was invited to perform at the prestigious Proms concert series at the Royal Albert Hall in London. Her performance was highly acclaimed, and she received a standing ovation from the audience. Over the next few years, Helen continued to perform in various concerts and recitals across Europe. She also started recording her music and released several albums, which were well-received by critics and audiences alike. Her music was known for its technical brilliance and emotional depth. In 1982, Helen was invited to perform at the International Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow, Russia. The competition was one of the most prestigious music competitions in the world, and Helen was the only British pianist to be selected to participate. She performed flawlessly and won the second prize, which was a significant achievement for a foreign pianist. Helen's success at the Tchaikovsky Competition opened up new opportunities for her. She was invited to perform with several leading orchestras, including the London Symphony Orchestra, the Berlin Philharmonic, and the New York Philharmonic. She also started touring extensively across the world, performing in countries such as Japan, China, and Australia. In 1990, Helen was awarded the Order of the British Empire (OBE) for her services to music. The award was a recognition of her contribution to the world of classical music and her efforts to promote music education. Helen continued to perform and record music throughout the 1990s and early 2000s. She also started teaching music at the Royal Academy of Music, where she had studied. Her students included several young pianists who went on to become successful musicians in their own right. In 2010, Helen announced her retirement from performing. She had given over 40 years of her life to music and had achieved a level of success that few musicians could match. Her retirement was a loss to the world of classical music, but her legacy lived on through her recordings and the musicians she had inspired. Helen Cole passed away on 15th March 2015, at the age of 64. She was remembered as a talented musician, a dedicated teacher, and a kind-hearted person who had touched the lives of many people through her music.
