The BYU Philharmonic Orchestra is a classical music ensemble based at Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah. The orchestra was founded in 1958 by K. Newell Dayley, a professor of music at BYU, and has since become one of the premier orchestras in the Intermountain West. The orchestra is made up of approximately 100 student musicians, many of whom are pursuing degrees in music performance or education. The ensemble is led by its conductor, Kory Katseanes, who has been with the orchestra since 2003. Over the years, the BYU Philharmonic Orchestra has performed a wide range of classical repertoire, from Baroque to contemporary music. The orchestra has also collaborated with a number of renowned soloists, including Yo-Yo Ma, Itzhak Perlman, and Joshua Bell. One of the highlights of the orchestra's history was its performance at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. in 2016. The orchestra was invited to perform as part of the Kennedy Center's Conservatory Project, which showcases the best young musicians from across the country. The BYU Philharmonic Orchestra's performance was well-received by both the audience and critics, and helped to raise the profile of the orchestra on a national level. In addition to its performances, the BYU Philharmonic Orchestra has also received numerous awards and accolades over the years. In 2015, the orchestra was named the winner of the American Prize in Orchestral Performance, which recognizes excellence in the field of orchestral music. The orchestra has also been invited to perform at a number of prestigious music festivals, including the Aspen Music Festival and the National Orchestral Institute. Despite its many accomplishments, the BYU Philharmonic Orchestra remains committed to its mission of providing high-quality musical experiences for its members and audiences alike. The orchestra continues to perform regularly on the BYU campus and throughout the Intermountain West, and is dedicated to promoting the art of classical music to new generations of listeners.More....
