The Illyria Consort
Artist Info

The Illyria Consort is a classical music ensemble that was founded in 2008 by a group of musicians who shared a passion for early music. The ensemble is based in London, England, and is known for its innovative and dynamic performances of music from the Renaissance and Baroque periods. The founding members of the Illyria Consort were violinist David Le Page, cellist Joseph Crouch, and harpsichordist Steven Devine. All three musicians had extensive experience performing early music and were eager to explore the rich repertoire of music from the 16th and 17th centuries. Over the years, the Illyria Consort has expanded to include a number of other talented musicians, including violist Jane Rogers, flutist Rachel Brown, and soprano Grace Davidson. The ensemble's core members, however, remain Le Page, Crouch, and Devine, who continue to lead the group and shape its artistic vision. One of the Illyria Consort's most notable performances was its debut concert at the Wigmore Hall in London in 2009. The program featured works by composers such as Monteverdi, Purcell, and Handel, and was praised by critics for its "exquisite musicianship" and "impeccable ensemble playing." Since then, the Illyria Consort has performed at some of the world's most prestigious concert halls and festivals, including the Edinburgh International Festival, the Salzburg Festival, and the BBC Proms. The ensemble has also collaborated with a number of other musicians and ensembles, including the Academy of Ancient Music, the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, and the Tallis Scholars. In addition to its live performances, the Illyria Consort has also released several critically acclaimed recordings. These include "The Italian Job," a collection of Italian Baroque music, and "The English Job," which features works by English composers such as Purcell and Dowland. One of the Illyria Consort's most recent projects is a collaboration with the British Museum, in which the ensemble is exploring the music of ancient Greece and Rome. The project includes a series of concerts and educational programs, as well as a recording of music from the ancient world. Throughout its history, the Illyria Consort has received numerous awards and accolades for its performances and recordings. These include the Gramophone Award for Best Baroque Vocal Recording, the Diapason d'Or, and the BBC Music Magazine Award for Best Choral Recording. Despite its many achievements, the Illyria Consort remains committed to exploring new and innovative ways of presenting early music to modern audiences. Whether performing in a concert hall or collaborating with a museum, the ensemble continues to push the boundaries of what is possible in the world of classical music.
