The Arioso Quartet is a classical music ensemble that has been captivating audiences with their exceptional performances for over two decades. The quartet was founded in 1998 by four talented musicians who shared a passion for chamber music and a desire to create a unique sound that would set them apart from other ensembles. The founding members of the Arioso Quartet were violinists John McGrosso and Rebecca Harris, violist Joanna Mendoza, and cellist Kurt Baldwin. All four musicians had extensive experience performing in various orchestras and chamber groups before coming together to form the quartet. Their shared love for chamber music and their desire to explore the rich repertoire of string quartets led them to form the Arioso Quartet. The quartet's name, Arioso, is derived from the Italian word "arioso," which means "song-like." This name reflects the quartet's commitment to creating a beautiful and expressive sound that is reminiscent of a vocal melody. Since its founding, the Arioso Quartet has become one of the most respected and sought-after chamber ensembles in the United States. The quartet has performed in some of the most prestigious concert halls and music festivals in the country, including Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, and the Aspen Music Festival. One of the highlights of the Arioso Quartet's career was their performance at the 2002 Aspen Music Festival, where they were awarded the prestigious Dorothy DeLay Fellowship. This award is given to outstanding young musicians who show exceptional promise in their field. The quartet's performance at the festival was praised for its technical precision, musicality, and emotional depth. In addition to their performance at the Aspen Music Festival, the Arioso Quartet has also been recognized for their outstanding performances at other music festivals and competitions. They were awarded the Grand Prize at the Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition in 2003, and they were finalists in the Banff International String Quartet Competition in 2004. The Arioso Quartet's repertoire is diverse and includes works from the classical, romantic, and contemporary periods. They have performed the complete string quartets of Beethoven, Brahms, and Shostakovich, as well as works by contemporary composers such as John Adams and Philip Glass. One of the quartet's most memorable performances was their rendition of Beethoven's String Quartet No. 14 in C-sharp minor, Op. 131. This work is considered one of the most challenging and emotionally complex string quartets in the repertoire, and the Arioso Quartet's performance was praised for its technical mastery and emotional depth. The Arioso Quartet has also collaborated with some of the most renowned musicians in the classical music world. They have performed with pianist Emanuel Ax, cellist Yo-Yo Ma, and violinist Joshua Bell, among others. In addition to their performances, the Arioso Quartet is also committed to music education and outreach. They have conducted masterclasses and workshops for young musicians at various schools and music festivals, and they have also performed for underserved communities and at hospitals and nursing homes. The Arioso Quartet's commitment to excellence and their passion for chamber music have made them one of the most respected and beloved ensembles in the classical music world.
