He was the youngest of three children and grew up in a family that was passionate about music. His father was a pianist, and his mother was a singer, which inspired Paul to pursue a career in music. At the age of six, Paul started playing the piano and showed exceptional talent. He was enrolled in a music school where he received formal training in piano and music theory. He also learned to play the violin and the cello, which helped him develop a deeper understanding of music. In 1968, Paul enrolled at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels, where he studied under the guidance of renowned pianist and composer, André Dumortier. During his time at the conservatory, Paul honed his skills and developed a unique style of playing that was characterized by his technical proficiency and emotional depth. After graduating from the conservatory, Paul embarked on a career as a concert pianist. He performed extensively throughout Europe and North America, captivating audiences with his virtuosity and musicality. He was particularly renowned for his interpretations of the works of Chopin, Beethoven, and Mozart, which he played with great sensitivity and nuance. One of the highlights of Paul's career was his performance at the Carnegie Hall in New York City in 1985. He played a program that included works by Chopin, Beethoven, and Liszt, and received a standing ovation from the audience. The New York Times praised his performance, calling it "a masterful display of technical prowess and musical sensitivity." In addition to his concert performances, Paul also recorded extensively. He released several albums, including a critically acclaimed recording of Chopin's complete works for piano. His recordings were praised for their technical excellence and musicality, and he won several awards for his work, including the Grand Prix du Disque. Throughout his career, Paul was also a dedicated teacher. He taught at several music schools and conservatories, including the Royal Conservatory of Brussels, where he had studied. He was known for his patient and nurturing approach to teaching, and many of his students went on to have successful careers in music. Sadly, Paul's career was cut short when he was diagnosed with cancer in 1995. He continued to perform and teach despite his illness, but his health deteriorated rapidly, and he passed away on June 15, 1997, at the age of 47. Paul de Clerck was a gifted musician who left a lasting legacy in the world of classical music.
