Role:EnsembleQuatuor Franz Joseph is a classical music ensemble that was founded in 1989 in France. The ensemble is named after the famous Austrian composer Franz Joseph Haydn, who is considered to be the father of the string quartet. The group is known for its exceptional performances of classical and contemporary music, and has won numerous awards and accolades for its work. The founding members of Quatuor Franz Joseph were violinists Jean-Marc Phillips-Varjabédian and Patrick Gallois, violist Pierre-Henri Xuereb, and cellist François Kieffer. All four musicians were accomplished performers in their own right, and had previously played with other well-known ensembles before coming together to form Quatuor Franz Joseph. The ensemble quickly gained a reputation for its dynamic and expressive performances, and began to receive invitations to perform at major music festivals and concert halls around the world. Some of the highlights of the group's early career include performances at the Festival de Radio France et Montpellier, the Festival de la Roque d'Anthéron, and the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées in Paris. Over the years, Quatuor Franz Joseph has undergone some changes in its membership, but has remained committed to its mission of bringing the beauty and complexity of classical music to audiences around the world. Today, the ensemble is made up of violinists Jean-Marc Phillips-Varjabédian and Svetlin Roussev, violist Léa Hennino, and cellist François Kieffer. One of the defining characteristics of Quatuor Franz Joseph is its dedication to performing both classical and contemporary music. The group has commissioned and premiered works by a number of contemporary composers, including Thierry Escaich, Philippe Hersant, and Bruno Mantovani. At the same time, the ensemble has also performed and recorded many of the great works of the classical repertoire, including the string quartets of Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, and Schubert. Quatuor Franz Joseph has received numerous awards and accolades for its work over the years. In 1991, the ensemble won the First Prize at the International String Quartet Competition in Evian, France. This was followed by a number of other awards, including the Diapason d'Or and the Choc de la Musique.
