His father, the renowned tenor Ernst Haefliger, was a prominent figure in the classical music world, and his mother, Maja Haefliger, was a pianist and music teacher. Haefliger began playing the piano at a young age and showed exceptional talent early on. He studied with his mother and later with Aloys Kontarsky at the Cologne Musikhochschule. He also received guidance from other notable pianists, including Alfred Brendel and Murray Perahia. Haefliger made his debut as a soloist with the Zurich Tonhalle Orchestra at the age of 17, and since then, he has performed with many of the world's leading orchestras, including the Berlin Philharmonic, the London Symphony Orchestra, and the New York Philharmonic. He has also collaborated with renowned conductors such as Bernard Haitink, Sir Simon Rattle, and Riccardo Chailly. Haefliger's repertoire is vast and includes works by many of the great composers, including Bach, Beethoven, Mozart, Schubert, and Brahms. He is particularly known for his interpretations of the music of Schumann, and he has recorded the composer's complete piano works for the Avie label. In addition to his work as a soloist, Haefliger is also an accomplished chamber musician. He has performed with many of the world's leading chamber ensembles, including the Emerson String Quartet and the Hagen Quartet. He is also a regular participant in the Marlboro Music Festival, where he has collaborated with some of the most distinguished musicians of our time. Haefliger has received numerous awards and accolades throughout his career. In 1986, he won the Geneva International Music Competition, and in 1987, he was awarded the Mozart Prize by the Mozart Society of Zurich. Haefliger is also a dedicated teacher and has held teaching positions at the Hochschule für Musik in Basel, the Hochschule für Musik und Theater in Munich, and the Juilliard School in New York. He is currently a professor of piano at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna. Haefliger's recordings have received critical acclaim and have been recognized with numerous awards, including the Diapason d'Or, the Gramophone Award, and the Preis der Deutschen Schallplattenkritik. His recordings of Schumann's piano works have been particularly well-received, with Gramophone magazine describing them as "a landmark in the history of Schumann interpretation."
