Knabenchor Der Chorakademie Dortmund, also known as the Dortmund Boys' Choir, is a renowned classical music ensemble based in Dortmund, Germany. The choir was founded in 1946 by Fritz ter Wey, a music teacher who aimed to provide young boys with the opportunity to learn and perform choral music at a high level. The choir started with just a handful of boys, but quickly grew in size and reputation. Under ter Wey's leadership, the choir became known for its exceptional musicality and professionalism, and began to perform at major events and venues throughout Germany and beyond. One of the choir's early highlights was its performance at the 1950 World Youth Festival in Berlin, where it received widespread acclaim for its rendition of Bach's St. Matthew Passion. This performance helped to establish the choir as one of the leading ensembles of its kind in Europe. Over the years, the Dortmund Boys' Choir has continued to build on its reputation for excellence, performing at major festivals and events around the world. The choir has collaborated with many of the world's leading orchestras and conductors, including the Berlin Philharmonic, the London Symphony Orchestra, and Sir Simon Rattle. In addition to its performances, the choir has also received numerous awards and accolades for its recordings. Its 1995 recording of Bach's St. John Passion, conducted by Wolfgang Helbich, was awarded the prestigious Echo Klassik award, and its 2009 recording of Mendelssohn's Elijah, conducted by Ingo Metzmacher, was nominated for a Grammy Award. One of the choir's most notable achievements came in 2011, when it was invited to perform at the Vatican for Pope Benedict XVI. The choir's performance of Mozart's Coronation Mass was met with a standing ovation from the audience, and was widely praised for its beauty and precision. Today, the Dortmund Boys' Choir continues to be one of the most respected and admired choral ensembles in the world. Under the leadership of conductor Felix Heitmann, the choir remains committed to its mission of providing young boys with the opportunity to learn and perform choral music at the highest level, and to sharing the beauty and power of classical music with audiences around the world.
