Born on August 22, 1964, in Bergen, Norway, Botnen showed an early interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of six. He received his first formal training at the Bergen Conservatory of Music, where he studied with Einar Steen-Nøkleberg and Jiri Hlinka. Botnen's talent as a pianist was evident from an early age, and he quickly gained a reputation as one of Norway's most promising young musicians. In 1983, he won first prize in the Norwegian National Piano Competition, which led to a series of high-profile performances throughout Norway and Europe. He continued his studies at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki, Finland, where he worked with Liisa Pohjola and Erik T. Tawaststjerna.
