He was the son of a music teacher and grew up in a family that was passionate about music. From a young age, Raabe showed a keen interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of four. He was a prodigious talent and quickly became known for his exceptional musical abilities. Raabe's family fled Germany during World War II and settled in the United States. He continued his musical education in the US and studied at the Juilliard School of Music in New York City. He also studied with some of the most renowned pianists of the time, including Vladimir Horowitz and Artur Rubinstein. Raabe made his debut as a concert pianist in 1950, performing with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra. He quickly gained a reputation as one of the most talented pianists of his generation and began performing at major concert halls around the world. He was known for his technical skill, musicality, and ability to bring out the emotional depth of the music he played. Over the course of his career, Raabe performed with some of the world's most prestigious orchestras, including the Berlin Philharmonic, the London Symphony Orchestra, and the Vienna Philharmonic. He also collaborated with many of the leading conductors of the time, including Leonard Bernstein, Herbert von Karajan, and Georg Solti. One of the highlights of Raabe's career was his performance of Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 5 with the Berlin Philharmonic in 1963. The performance was widely acclaimed and cemented Raabe's reputation as one of the greatest pianists of his time. Raabe was also a prolific recording artist and made numerous recordings throughout his career. His recordings of the works of Beethoven, Chopin, and Mozart are considered some of the finest interpretations of these composers' music. In addition to his performing career, Raabe was also a respected music educator. He taught at the Juilliard School of Music and the Manhattan School of Music, and his students included many of the leading pianists of the next generation. Raabe received numerous awards and honors throughout his career, including the Grammy Award for Best Classical Performance in 1965. He was also awarded the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany in recognition of his contributions to music. Despite his many achievements, Raabe remained humble and dedicated to his craft throughout his life.
