Born on October 18, 1965, in Sofia, Bulgaria, Milanov showed an early interest in music and began studying piano at the age of six. He went on to attend the National Music School in Sofia, where he studied piano and conducting. Milanov's talent as a pianist was evident from an early age, and he won several awards and competitions in Bulgaria. In 1984, he was awarded the Grand Prix at the National Piano Competition in Bulgaria, and in 1985, he won first prize at the International Piano Competition in Senigallia, Italy. After completing his studies in Bulgaria, Milanov moved to the United States to further his education. He attended the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, where he studied piano with Eleanor Sokoloff and conducting with Otto-Werner Mueller. He also studied conducting with Charles Dutoit at the Montreal Symphony Orchestra Academy. Milanov's career as a conductor began in 1997, when he was appointed as the assistant conductor of the Philadelphia Orchestra. He quickly rose through the ranks, and in 2000, he was appointed as the associate conductor of the orchestra. During his time with the Philadelphia Orchestra, Milanov conducted numerous concerts and made several recordings with the orchestra. In 2007, Milanov was appointed as the music director of the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra. During his tenure with the orchestra, he led the ensemble in numerous performances and recordings, including a critically acclaimed recording of the music of Samuel Barber. Milanov has also served as the music director of the Columbus Symphony Orchestra and the Princeton Symphony Orchestra. He has conducted numerous other orchestras around the world, including the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, the Orchestre National de Lyon, and the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra. In addition to his work as a conductor, Milanov is also an accomplished pianist. He has performed as a soloist with numerous orchestras, including the Philadelphia Orchestra, the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra, and the Columbus Symphony Orchestra. Milanov's performances have been praised for their energy, precision, and musicality. He has been described as a conductor who is able to bring out the best in his musicians and create a sense of unity and purpose in his performances. Milanov has received numerous awards and honors for his work as a conductor.
