Founded in 1988, the ensemble has become one of the most renowned and respected orchestras in Italy and Europe. The Florence May Festival Orchestra & Chorus was founded by Maestro Riccardo Muti, one of the most celebrated conductors of our time. Muti had a vision of creating an orchestra and chorus that would bring together the best musicians and singers from Italy and around the world to perform the great works of classical music. The ensemble's main members are the musicians and singers who make up the orchestra and chorus. The orchestra is made up of some of the finest musicians in Italy and Europe, including members of the Orchestra dell'Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia, the Orchestra del Teatro alla Scala, and the Berlin Philharmonic. The chorus is made up of professional singers from Italy and around the world, many of whom have performed with some of the world's leading opera companies. Over the years, the Florence May Festival Orchestra & Chorus has performed some of the most important works in the classical music repertoire. The ensemble has performed works by composers such as Beethoven, Mozart, Brahms, Verdi, and Puccini, among others. The ensemble has also premiered new works by contemporary composers, including Luciano Berio and Salvatore Sciarrino. One of the highlights of the Florence May Festival Orchestra & Chorus's performances was its 1992 performance of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony. The performance was conducted by Maestro Muti and featured the orchestra and chorus, as well as soloists such as soprano Cheryl Studer and tenor Vinson Cole. The performance was hailed as one of the greatest performances of the Ninth Symphony ever recorded, and it won the Grammy Award for Best Orchestral Performance in 1993. Another highlight of the ensemble's performances was its 2000 performance of Verdi's Requiem.
