Oslo Cathedral Choir is a renowned classical music ensemble based in Oslo, Norway. The choir was founded in 1950 by the Norwegian composer and conductor, Knut Nystedt, who served as its artistic director until 1990. Since then, the choir has been led by several distinguished conductors, including Terje Kvam, Vivianne Sydnes, and Håkon Daniel Nystedt, the son of the choir's founder. The Oslo Cathedral Choir is made up of approximately 50 singers, all of whom are volunteers. The choir's members come from a variety of backgrounds and professions, but they share a passion for choral music and a commitment to excellence. The choir's repertoire includes a wide range of music, from medieval chants to contemporary works, and it has performed in some of the world's most prestigious concert halls and cathedrals. One of the highlights of the Oslo Cathedral Choir's history was its participation in the coronation of King Harald V of Norway in 1991. The choir performed at the coronation ceremony in Oslo Cathedral, singing a specially commissioned work by Knut Nystedt. The performance was broadcast live on national television and was seen by millions of viewers around the world. The choir has also performed at numerous international festivals and competitions, winning several awards and accolades along the way. In 1993, the choir won first prize in the mixed choir category at the International Choral Competition in Tolosa, Spain. In 2005, the choir won the Grand Prix at the International Choral Competition in Varna, Bulgaria, and in 2011, it won first prize in the mixed choir category at the International Choral Competition in Maribor, Slovenia. In addition to its international performances, the Oslo Cathedral Choir is also a fixture in the Norwegian music scene. The choir performs regularly at Oslo Cathedral, where it is the resident choir, and it has also performed at other major venues in Norway, including the Bergen International Festival and the Trondheim International Chamber Music Festival. The Oslo Cathedral Choir has recorded several albums over the years, showcasing its diverse repertoire and exceptional musicianship. Its recordings have received critical acclaim and have been praised for their clarity, precision, and emotional depth. Some of the choir's most notable recordings include "Nystedt: Sacred Choral Works," "Bach: Motets," and "Mozart: Requiem."
