Artist Info

Arwen Myers is a Canadian soprano who has made a name for herself in the world of classical music. Born in Vancouver, British Columbia, on May 22, 1983, Myers grew up in a family that valued music and the arts. Her mother was a pianist, and her father was a music teacher, so it was no surprise that Myers showed an interest in music from a young age. Myers began her musical education at the age of five, when she started taking piano lessons. She quickly showed a talent for the instrument, and by the time she was a teenager, she was performing in recitals and competitions. However, it was not until she was in high school that she discovered her true passion: singing. Myers joined her school choir and began taking voice lessons. She quickly realized that singing was what she wanted to do with her life. After graduating from high school, she enrolled in the music program at the University of British Columbia, where she studied voice with Nancy Hermiston. During her time at UBC, Myers began to make a name for herself as a soprano. She won several awards and competitions, including the Vancouver Women's Musical Society Scholarship and the Vancouver Opera Guild Scholarship. She also performed in several productions with the UBC Opera Ensemble, including Mozart's "The Marriage of Figaro" and Puccini's "La Bohème." After graduating from UBC with a Bachelor of Music degree, Myers continued her studies at the University of Toronto, where she earned a Master of Music degree in Opera Performance. While at U of T, she studied with Mary Morrison and performed in several productions with the Opera Division, including Handel's "Giulio Cesare" and Britten's "The Turn of the Screw." After completing her studies at U of T, Myers began to establish herself as a professional soprano. She performed with several opera companies, including the Canadian Opera Company, Opera Atelier, and Pacific Opera Victoria. She also performed in concerts and recitals across Canada and the United States. One of Myers' most notable performances was in the Canadian Opera Company's production of Mozart's "The Magic Flute" in 2011. She played the role of Pamina, the daughter of the Queen of the Night. The production was well-received by critics and audiences alike, and Myers' performance was praised for its beauty and emotional depth. Myers has also been recognized for her work as a performer and educator. In 2013, she was awarded the Vancouver Opera Guild's Career Development Grant, which allowed her to study with renowned soprano Dawn Upshaw. She has also been a guest lecturer at several universities and music schools, including the University of British Columbia and the Vancouver Academy of Music. In addition to her work as a performer and educator, Myers is also a champion of new music. She has premiered several works by Canadian composers, including "The Heart's Obsession" by Jeffrey Ryan and "The Raven" by Andrew Staniland. She has also collaborated with several contemporary music ensembles, including the Turning Point Ensemble and the Vancouver New Music Society. Myers' talent and dedication to her craft have earned her several awards and accolades. In 2015, she was named one of CBC's "30 Hot Canadian Classical Musicians Under 30." She was also a finalist in the Jeunesses Musicales International Voice Competition in Montreal in 2012. Today, Myers continues to perform and teach across Canada and the United States.
