The Columbus Boychoir is a renowned classical music ensemble that has been captivating audiences with its angelic voices for over 70 years. Founded in 1940 by Herbert Huffman, the choir has become a cultural icon in the United States and beyond. Herbert Huffman, a music teacher at Columbus Junior High School, was inspired to start the Columbus Boychoir after hearing a performance by the Vienna Boys' Choir. He believed that a similar choir could be established in Columbus, Ohio, and set out to recruit talented young singers from the local community. The first members of the choir were selected from the Columbus Public Schools and the choir quickly gained a reputation for excellence. Over the years, the Columbus Boychoir has had many talented members, including some who have gone on to become famous musicians in their own right. One of the most notable alumni is John Legend, who sang with the choir as a child and went on to become a Grammy-winning singer-songwriter. The Columbus Boychoir has performed at some of the most prestigious venues in the world, including Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, and the Vatican. The choir has also toured extensively throughout the United States and Europe, performing in countries such as Italy, Germany, and Austria. One of the highlights of the Columbus Boychoir's career was their performance at the inauguration of President John F. Kennedy in 1961. The choir sang the national anthem and several other patriotic songs, earning them national recognition and praise. The Columbus Boychoir has also won numerous awards and accolades over the years. In 1959, the choir won first place in the International Eisteddfod in Llangollen, Wales, which is one of the most prestigious choral competitions in the world. The choir has also won several awards from the American Choral Directors Association and has been featured on numerous recordings and television programs. Despite its many accomplishments, the Columbus Boychoir has faced its share of challenges over the years. In 2003, the choir was forced to file for bankruptcy due to financial difficulties. However, the choir was able to reorganize and continue performing, thanks to the support of its dedicated fans and supporters. Today, the Columbus Boychoir continues to inspire audiences with its beautiful music and dedication to excellence. The choir is made up of boys between the ages of 8 and 18, who are selected through a rigorous audition process. The choir performs a wide range of music, from classical choral works to contemporary pop songs, and is known for its impeccable vocal technique and musicality. In addition to its regular performances, the Columbus Boychoir also offers a variety of educational programs and outreach initiatives.
