He was the son of a wealthy Jewish family, and his father was a successful businessman. Asriel showed an early interest in music and began taking piano lessons at the age of six. He was a prodigious talent and quickly became a skilled pianist. Asriel studied music at the Berlin Conservatory, where he was a student of the renowned composer Max Bruch. He also studied with the pianist and composer Ferruccio Busoni, who had a significant influence on his musical style. Asriel was a gifted composer, and his early works showed a strong influence from the Romantic era. In 1914, Asriel was drafted into the German army and served in World War I. He was wounded in battle and spent several months in a military hospital. During this time, he continued to compose music and wrote several pieces for piano. After the war, Asriel returned to Berlin and resumed his studies at the conservatory. He also began to establish himself as a composer and pianist, performing his own works in concerts throughout Germany. In 1921, he married the pianist and composer Gertrud Meyer-Denkmann, who became his lifelong collaborator and muse. Asriel's music continued to evolve, and he began to incorporate elements of modernism into his compositions. He was particularly influenced by the music of Arnold Schoenberg and the Second Viennese School. Asriel's works from this period are characterized by their dissonant harmonies and complex rhythms. In 1933, the Nazi party came to power in Germany, and Asriel's life was forever changed. As a Jew, he was no longer allowed to perform in public or have his music played on the radio. He and his wife were forced to flee Germany and emigrate to Switzerland. In Switzerland, Asriel continued to compose music and perform in private concerts. He also taught piano and composition at the Zurich Conservatory. Despite the challenges he faced as a refugee, Asriel remained committed to his art and continued to create new works. Asriel's music from this period reflects the turmoil and uncertainty of his life as a refugee. His compositions are often dark and brooding, with themes of loss and displacement. However, they also contain moments of beauty and hope, reflecting Asriel's resilience and determination. Asriel's most famous work is his Piano Concerto No. 1, which he composed in 1927. The concerto is a virtuosic showcase for the soloist, with complex rhythms and intricate harmonies. It has been performed by many of the world's leading pianists and remains a staple of the classical repertoire. Other notable works by Asriel include his String Quartet No. 1, which he composed in 1923, and his Sonata for Violin and Piano, which he wrote in 1937. Both pieces showcase Asriel's mastery of chamber music and his ability to create complex textures and harmonies with a small ensemble. Asriel's music has been praised for its emotional depth and technical brilliance. His works are often challenging for performers and audiences alike, but they reward careful listening with moments of beauty and insight. André Asriel died on December 26, 1965, in Zurich, Switzerland. He left behind a legacy of music that continues to inspire and challenge musicians and listeners around the world.More....
