Artist Info
The Michelangelo String Quartet is a renowned classical music ensemble that has been captivating audiences around the world for over two decades. The quartet was founded in 2002 by four talented musicians who shared a passion for chamber music and a desire to create a unique sound that would set them apart from other ensembles. The founding members of the Michelangelo String Quartet were Mihaela Martin (violin), Daniel Austrich (violin), Nobuko Imai (viola), and Frans Helmerson (cello). All four musicians were highly accomplished in their own right, having performed with some of the world's most prestigious orchestras and ensembles. The quartet's name was inspired by the famous Italian artist Michelangelo, who was known for his mastery of form and his ability to create works of art that were both beautiful and powerful. The members of the Michelangelo String Quartet sought to emulate this same level of artistry and excellence in their music. From the very beginning, the quartet's performances were met with critical acclaim. Their debut concert in Amsterdam was hailed as a "triumph" by the Dutch newspaper Het Parool, and they quickly gained a reputation as one of the most exciting and innovative chamber ensembles of their time. Over the years, the Michelangelo String Quartet has performed at some of the world's most prestigious concert halls and festivals, including the Berlin Philharmonic, the Salzburg Festival, and the Edinburgh International Festival. They have also collaborated with some of the most celebrated musicians of our time, including pianist Martha Argerich and cellist Yo-Yo Ma. One of the quartet's most memorable performances was their 2006 concert at the Wigmore Hall in London, where they performed Beethoven's complete string quartets over the course of six concerts. The series was hailed as a "monumental achievement" by The Guardian, and cemented the quartet's reputation as one of the foremost interpreters of Beethoven's music. In addition to their performances, the Michelangelo String Quartet has also received numerous awards and accolades for their recordings. Their 2008 recording of Schubert's String Quartet No. 14 in D minor, "Death and the Maiden," was awarded the prestigious Diapason d'Or, and their 2012 recording of Beethoven's String Quartets Nos. 12 and 15 was nominated for a Grammy Award. Despite their many achievements, the members of the Michelangelo String Quartet remain humble and dedicated to their craft. They continue to push the boundaries of chamber music, exploring new repertoire and collaborating with other musicians to create unforgettable performances that inspire and delight audiences around the world.More....
