Her father was a violinist and her mother was a pianist, so it was no surprise that Smith showed an interest in music at a young age. She began playing the cello at the age of six and quickly showed a natural talent for the instrument. Smith's early musical education was at the Yehudi Menuhin School in Surrey, England. She studied under the tutelage of William Pleeth, a renowned cello teacher who had also taught Jacqueline du Pré. Pleeth recognized Smith's talent and encouraged her to pursue a career in music. After completing her studies at the Yehudi Menuhin School, Smith went on to study at the Royal College of Music in London. There, she studied with renowned cellist and teacher, Joan Dickson. Smith credits Dickson with helping her to develop her own unique style of playing. In 1986, Smith won the prestigious BBC Young Musician of the Year competition. This was a major turning point in her career, as it brought her to the attention of the classical music world. The competition was broadcast on television and watched by millions of people, making Smith a household name overnight. Following her win, Smith began to receive invitations to perform with major orchestras around the world. She made her debut with the London Symphony Orchestra in 1987, playing the Elgar Cello Concerto. This performance was widely praised by critics, who noted Smith's technical skill and emotional depth. Over the years, Smith has performed with many of the world's leading orchestras, including the Berlin Philharmonic, the New York Philharmonic, and the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra.
