Born on October 27, 1967, in Sofia, Bulgaria, Varbanov showed an early interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of five. He received his first piano lessons from his mother, who was a music teacher, and later studied at the National School of Music in Sofia. Varbanov's talent as a pianist was evident from an early age, and he quickly gained a reputation as one of Bulgaria's most promising young musicians. In 1985, he won first prize at the National Piano Competition in Bulgaria, and in 1987, he was awarded a scholarship to study at the Moscow Tchaikovsky Conservatory in Russia. During his time in Moscow, Varbanov studied with some of the most renowned pianists and teachers in the world, including Lev Naumov, Sergei Dorensky, and Mikhail Voskresensky. He also had the opportunity to perform in some of Russia's most prestigious concert halls, including the Great Hall of the Moscow Conservatory and the Tchaikovsky Hall. After completing his studies in Moscow, Varbanov returned to Bulgaria, where he continued to perform and teach. In 1991, he was appointed as a professor of piano at the National Academy of Music in Sofia, a position he still holds today. He has also served as a jury member for numerous international piano competitions, including the International Piano Competition "Virtuosi per Musica di Pianoforte" in the Czech Republic and the International Piano Competition "Citta di Marsala" in Italy. He has collaborated with some of the world's leading orchestras, including the Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra, the Sofia Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Czech National Symphony Orchestra. In addition to his work as a performer and teacher, Varbanov is also a prolific recording artist. He has released numerous albums, including recordings of works by Chopin, Liszt, and Rachmaninoff, as well as lesser-known composers such as Nikolai Medtner and Alexander Scriabin. His recordings have received widespread critical acclaim, and he has been praised for his ability to bring new life to familiar works and to shed light on lesser-known composers. One of the highlights of Varbanov's career was his performance at the 2008 Sofia Music Weeks festival, where he performed the complete cycle of Beethoven's 32 piano sonatas over the course of eight concerts. The performance was hailed as a triumph, and Varbanov was praised for his ability to bring new insights to these familiar works.
