She grew up in a family of musicians, with her mother being a pianist and her father a cellist. From a young age, Nancy showed a natural talent for music and began playing the violin at the age of four. Nancy's parents recognized her talent and encouraged her to pursue a career in music. She began taking private lessons with renowned violinists and attended the Juilliard School's Pre-College Division. At the age of 16, Nancy was accepted into the Juilliard School's undergraduate program, where she studied with Itzhak Perlman. During her time at Juilliard, Nancy won several awards and competitions, including the Juilliard Concerto Competition and the International Violin Competition in Indianapolis. She also performed as a soloist with several orchestras, including the New York Philharmonic and the Boston Symphony Orchestra. After graduating from Juilliard, Nancy continued her studies at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, where she studied with Jaime Laredo. She also spent a year studying in Europe, where she worked with some of the world's leading violinists. Nancy's career as a soloist continued to flourish, and she performed with orchestras around the world, including the London Symphony Orchestra, the Berlin Philharmonic, and the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra. She also performed at major music festivals, including the Salzburg Festival and the Tanglewood Music Festival. In addition to her solo career, Nancy was also a dedicated chamber musician. She was a founding member of the Balach String Quartet, which performed extensively throughout the United States and Europe. The quartet was known for its innovative programming and its commitment to contemporary music. Throughout her career, Nancy was recognized for her exceptional talent and musicianship. She received numerous awards and honors, including the Avery Fisher Career Grant and the MacArthur Fellowship. She was also a frequent guest on radio and television programs, where she spoke about her love of music and her dedication to her craft. Tragically, Nancy's career was cut short when she was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer at the age of 32. Despite her illness, she continued to perform and record, inspiring audiences around the world with her courage and determination. Nancy Maria Balach passed away on June 15, 2018, at the age of 33.
