Bobby Chen is a renowned classical pianist who has captivated audiences around the world with his virtuosic performances and deep musicality. Born in Taiwan in 1974, Chen showed an early aptitude for music and began studying piano at the age of four. His parents recognized his talent and encouraged him to pursue a career in music, enrolling him in the prestigious Juilliard School in New York City when he was just 12 years old. At Juilliard, Chen studied with some of the most respected piano teachers in the world, including Yoheved Kaplinsky and Jerome Lowenthal. He quickly distinguished himself as a prodigious talent, winning numerous competitions and awards, including the Gina Bachauer International Piano Competition and the Young Concert Artists International Auditions. Chen's early success paved the way for a career as a soloist and chamber musician, and he has since performed with many of the world's leading orchestras, including the New York Philharmonic, the London Symphony Orchestra, and the Berlin Philharmonic. He has also collaborated with some of the most celebrated conductors of our time, including Sir Simon Rattle, Zubin Mehta, and Christoph Eschenbach. One of Chen's most memorable performances was his debut with the New York Philharmonic in 1997, where he played Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 2 to critical acclaim. The New York Times praised his "dazzling technique and musicality," and the performance launched Chen's career as one of the most exciting young pianists of his generation. Chen's repertoire is vast and varied, ranging from the Baroque works of Bach and Handel to the Romantic masterpieces of Chopin and Liszt. He is particularly known for his interpretations of the music of Beethoven, and has recorded all 32 of the composer's piano sonatas to great acclaim. In addition to his work as a soloist, Chen is also an accomplished chamber musician, and has performed with some of the world's leading string quartets, including the Emerson Quartet and the Tokyo String Quartet. He is a frequent collaborator with his wife, the violinist Cho-Liang Lin, and together they have recorded several albums of chamber music. Chen's recordings have received numerous awards and accolades, including a Grammy nomination for his recording of the complete Beethoven piano sonatas. He has also been recognized for his commitment to contemporary music, and has premiered works by some of the most important composers of our time, including John Adams, Philip Glass, and Tan Dun. Despite his many accomplishments, Chen remains humble and dedicated to his craft. He continues to perform around the world, and is known for his passionate and deeply expressive playing.
