Stig Ribbing was a Swedish classical music artist who was born on May 22, 1910, in Stockholm, Sweden. He was the son of a music teacher and grew up in a family that was passionate about music. From a young age, Ribbing showed a natural talent for music and began playing the piano at the age of six. He later learned to play the violin and the viola. Ribbing's musical education began at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm, where he studied under the tutelage of the renowned Swedish composer and conductor, Hugo Alfvén. He later continued his studies in Berlin, Germany, where he studied with the famous violinist and composer, Carl Flesch. In 1932, Ribbing made his debut as a soloist with the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra, performing the Violin Concerto in D major by Ludwig van Beethoven. The performance was a huge success, and Ribbing quickly gained a reputation as one of Sweden's most talented young musicians. Over the next few years, Ribbing continued to perform as a soloist with various orchestras throughout Europe, including the Berlin Philharmonic and the London Symphony Orchestra. He also began to establish himself as a chamber musician, performing with some of the most renowned ensembles of the time, including the Budapest Quartet and the Pro Arte Quartet. In 1940, Ribbing was appointed as the principal violist of the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra, a position he held for over 20 years. During this time, he continued to perform as a soloist and chamber musician, and also began to teach at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm. One of Ribbing's most notable performances took place in 1956, when he performed the Viola Concerto by William Walton with the London Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of the composer himself. The performance was widely praised, and Ribbing was hailed as one of the greatest violists of his time. Ribbing's contributions to the world of classical music were recognized with numerous awards and honors throughout his career. In 1958, he was awarded the Litteris et Artibus medal by the Swedish government, in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the arts. He was also awarded the Royal Swedish Academy of Music's Medal of Honor in 1970. Ribbing continued to perform and teach until his death in 1985, at the age of 75. He left behind a legacy as one of Sweden's most beloved and respected classical musicians, and his contributions to the world of music continue to be celebrated to this day.
