The American String Quartet is a renowned classical music ensemble that has been captivating audiences around the world for over four decades. The quartet was founded in 1974 by four young musicians who shared a passion for chamber music and a desire to create a unique sound that would set them apart from other ensembles. The founding members of the American String Quartet were Peter Winograd (violin), Laurie Carney (violin), Daniel Avshalomov (viola), and David Geber (cello). All four musicians had studied at the Juilliard School in New York City and had already established themselves as talented performers in their own right. However, it was their shared vision and chemistry that made the American String Quartet a force to be reckoned with. From the very beginning, the quartet was committed to exploring the full range of the chamber music repertoire, from the classics of Mozart and Beethoven to the contemporary works of living composers. They were also dedicated to bringing chamber music to new audiences and to collaborating with other artists in different genres. One of the highlights of the American String Quartet's early career was their residency at the Marlboro Music Festival in Vermont. This prestigious festival, founded by pianist Rudolf Serkin, was a gathering place for some of the world's most talented young musicians. The quartet's performances at Marlboro were widely praised, and they quickly gained a reputation as one of the most exciting young ensembles on the scene. In 1976, the American String Quartet made their New York debut at the 92nd Street Y, one of the city's most prestigious concert venues. The program included works by Haydn, Beethoven, and Bartok, and the quartet's performance was met with enthusiastic applause. This concert marked the beginning of a long and fruitful relationship between the quartet and the 92nd Street Y, which continues to this day. Over the years, the American String Quartet has performed at many of the world's most prestigious concert halls, including Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, and the Wigmore Hall in London. They have also collaborated with many of the world's leading musicians, including pianists Menahem Pressler and Leon Fleisher, cellist Yo-Yo Ma, and soprano Dawn Upshaw. One of the American String Quartet's most notable achievements was their complete cycle of Beethoven's string quartets, which they performed over the course of several seasons. This monumental undertaking was widely praised for its depth and insight, and it cemented the quartet's reputation as one of the foremost interpreters of Beethoven's music. In addition to their performances, the American String Quartet has also been recognized for their recordings. They have released over 50 albums, including several award-winning recordings of the works of Beethoven, Schubert, and Bartok. Their recording of the complete string quartets of Dmitri Shostakovich was particularly well-received, and it won a Grammy Award in 1987. Throughout their career, the American String Quartet has remained committed to education and outreach. They have taught masterclasses at universities and conservatories around the world, and they have also worked with young musicians through their residency at the Aspen Music Festival and School. In 2013, they founded the ASQ International Music Academy, which provides intensive training for young string players.
