His father was a renowned pianist, and his mother was a violinist. From a young age, Philip was exposed to classical music and began playing the piano at the age of four. Philip's parents recognized his talent and enrolled him in the Portland Youth Philharmonic when he was just six years old. He quickly excelled in the program and began performing in concerts with the orchestra. By the time he was a teenager, Philip had already won several local and regional piano competitions. In 2003, Philip was accepted into the prestigious Juilliard School in New York City. He studied under the tutelage of renowned pianist Emanuel Ax and graduated with a Bachelor of Music degree in 2007.
