Suoni Ensemble is a classical music ensemble that was founded in 1997 by a group of musicians who shared a passion for contemporary music. The ensemble is based in Toronto, Canada, and is known for its innovative programming and performances that showcase the works of living composers. The founding members of Suoni Ensemble were flutist Camille Watts, clarinetist Peter Stoll, violinist Mark Skazinetsky, cellist David Hetherington, and pianist Lydia Wong. The ensemble has since expanded to include a rotating roster of musicians, depending on the repertoire being performed. One of the highlights of Suoni Ensemble's early years was its participation in the 1998 International Society for Contemporary Music (ISCM) World Music Days festival, which was held in Manchester, England. The ensemble performed works by Canadian composers such as Alexina Louie, John Rea, and R. Murray Schafer, as well as international composers such as György Ligeti and Kaija Saariaho. Over the years, Suoni Ensemble has continued to perform at major festivals and venues around the world, including the Ottawa Chamber Music Festival, the Banff Centre for the Arts, and the Sound Symposium in Newfoundland. The ensemble has also collaborated with a wide range of artists, including dancers, visual artists, and poets. One of Suoni Ensemble's most notable collaborations was with the Canadian poet and novelist Anne Michaels. In 2005, the ensemble premiered a new work by composer Alexina Louie, based on Michaels' poem "The Weight of Oranges." The piece, which featured Michaels reading her poem alongside the ensemble's performance, was later recorded and released on CD. Suoni Ensemble has also been recognized for its contributions to contemporary music. In 2001, the ensemble was awarded the Vida Peene Award for Artistic Excellence by the Canadian Music Centre. The award recognized the ensemble's commitment to performing and promoting the works of Canadian composers. In addition to its performances and collaborations, Suoni Ensemble has also been involved in educational outreach programs. The ensemble has worked with students of all ages, from elementary school to university, to introduce them to contemporary music and the creative process. Overall, Suoni Ensemble has established itself as a leading voice in the world of contemporary classical music. With its innovative programming, commitment to new works, and collaborations with artists from a variety of disciplines, the ensemble continues to push the boundaries of what is possible in classical music.
