Paul Lustig Dunkel is a renowned classical music artist who has made significant contributions to the world of music as a flutist, conductor, and educator. Born on May 23, 1943, in New York City, Dunkel grew up in a family of musicians. His father, Joseph Dunkel, was a violinist, and his mother, Lillian Fuchs, was a violist. His sister, Paula Robison, is also a flutist. Dunkel began his musical journey at a young age, studying the flute with his mother. He later went on to study at the Juilliard School, where he earned a Bachelor of Music degree in 1964. He continued his studies at the Manhattan School of Music, where he earned a Master of Music degree in 1966. In 1966, Dunkel joined the New York Philharmonic as a flutist. He quickly rose through the ranks and was appointed principal flutist in 1971. During his time with the New York Philharmonic, Dunkel performed under the baton of some of the world's most renowned conductors, including Leonard Bernstein, Pierre Boulez, and Zubin Mehta. In addition to his work with the New York Philharmonic, Dunkel has also performed as a soloist and chamber musician. He has performed with numerous orchestras and chamber ensembles, including the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, the New York Woodwind Quintet, and the American Brass Quintet. Dunkel's conducting career began in the 1970s when he founded the Westchester Philharmonic. He served as the orchestra's music director and conductor for 32 years, from 1979 to 2011. Under his leadership, the Westchester Philharmonic became one of the most respected regional orchestras in the United States. Dunkel has also served as a guest conductor for numerous orchestras, including the New York Philharmonic, the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and the Philadelphia Orchestra. He has conducted in some of the world's most prestigious concert halls, including Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, and the Royal Albert Hall. In 2004, he was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Westchester Arts Council. Throughout his career, Dunkel has remained committed to promoting new music and supporting emerging composers. He has commissioned and premiered numerous works by contemporary composers, including John Corigliano, Joan Tower, and Christopher Rouse.
